Introduction

Every year, thousands of UK drivers reach the same point with their car. It fails the MOT, the repair bill gets silly, the warning lights keep coming, and what used to be a useful runaround becomes a drain on time and money.

That is where scrappage becomes the sensible option.

Our Annual Scrap Car Price Report 2025 looks at the vehicles we collected and recycled throughout the year to show what drivers were actually being paid for scrap cars across Hertfordshire and nearby areas. It gives a useful snapshot of local scrap values, the types of cars most often reaching the end of the road, and the factors that had the biggest effect on price.

This year’s numbers tell an interesting story. While the wider UK market saw average scrap prices reported at around £220 to £230 by some national providers, our own average payout across 2025 came in at £268, suggesting that local pricing in our collection area remained competitive through much of the year.

It is worth saying up front that no two reports are measured in exactly the same way. Different companies cover different areas, process different types of vehicles, and use different date ranges or pricing methods. So the aim is not to claim there is one single “true” national figure. The aim is to put your local data into a broader, useful context.

What is the Scrap Car Price Report?

The Annual Scrap Car Price Report is is based on vehicles collected and processed by Scrap My Car Company between January 1st 2025 and December 31st 2025.

To calculate the average scrap car price, we total the amount paid for all vehicles collected during the year and divide that by the number of vehicles scrapped. This provides a useful benchmark for understanding how the market performed during that period.

It is important to remember that this figure represents an average. No two cars are identical, and the amount paid for an individual vehicle can vary significantly depending on a range of factors such as weight, make, model, condition, and the presence of valuable components.

The average simply helps provide a clearer picture of the overall market.

Why this report matters in 2026

The UK car parc is getting older. According to SMMT, there were a record 41.96 million vehicles on British roads in 2024, with 36.17 million cars in use, while the average age of a car on the road rose to 9.5 years and 43.4% of the parc was more than ten years old. Government figures similarly showed the average age of a licensed car at the end of 2024 was 10 years old.

That matters because an ageing national fleet usually means more vehicles are edging closer to end-of-life. More of them are reaching the point where repair costs no longer stack up. Some are too old for the owner to justify another MOT bill. Others are uneconomical after a breakdown, accident or engine failure.

In simple terms, Britain is holding onto cars for longer, and that creates a steady flow of vehicles entering the scrap and recycling market.

What Determines the Price of a Scrap Car?

Although scrap prices are influenced by global markets, the value of an individual vehicle depends on several key factors.

Weight

Weight is one of the most important factors in determining the price of a scrap car. Larger vehicles generally contain more metal and therefore often command higher prices.

This explains why bigger vehicles such as SUVs and 4x4s frequently achieve higher payouts.

Make and Model

Some makes and models hold stronger scrap value due to their weight or the value of reusable parts.

Large vehicles from brands like Land Rover, Jeep and Jaguar often achieve above-average scrap prices because of their size and build.

Parts and Components

Vehicles that still contain valuable parts may be worth more than those that have had components removed. Items such as catalytic converters, alloy wheels and engines can add value.

Removing parts before scrapping a car may actually reduce the price offered.

Vehicle Condition

While many scrap cars are non-runners, vehicles that still drive or are largely intact may be easier to collect and process, which can slightly influence the offer.

Location

Where the vehicle is located can also affect the price. Transportation costs, regional demand and proximity to recycling facilities can all influence scrap quotes.

The Average Age of Scrapped Vehicles

One of the most interesting findings from our data is the age of vehicles being scrapped.

In 2025 the average age of scrapped vehicles in our data was 19 years.

Across the wider UK market, similar studies suggest that the average scrapped vehicle is around 17 years old.

This highlights an important trend: cars are staying on the road for longer than ever before. Improvements in manufacturing, better corrosion protection and more reliable engines mean vehicles can remain usable for nearly two decades before finally reaching end-of-life.

Eventually, however, the cost of repairs or maintenance becomes greater than the value of the car itself. When that point arrives, scrapping becomes the most sensible option.

End-of-Year 2025 Average Scrap Car Price

After analysing all vehicles processed during 2025, the average scrap car price reached £268.

For many drivers, that represents a welcome return for a vehicle that may otherwise be sitting unused on a driveway or costing money in repairs, tax, or insurance.

Nationally, scrap values throughout 2025 remained fairly steady. Industry data indicates average scrap car prices fluctuated between £241 and £257 across the year, showing relatively small swings month-to-month.

Some reports also show that prices dipped to around £223 early in the year before gradually recovering later in 2025, demonstrating how quickly scrap markets can move depending on metal demand and economic conditions. Despite these fluctuations, the overall trend during the year remained stable, with most vehicles still delivering respectable returns when scrapped.

Why scrap car prices changed during 2025

Scrap car values are closely linked to the global metals market. The price paid for vehicles is influenced by the value of materials that can be recovered and recycled.

The main factors affecting scrap prices include:

  • Global demand for steel and other metals
  • The supply of scrap vehicles entering the market
  • Transportation and processing costs
  • Demand for reusable car parts
  • Regional competition between scrap buyers

Steel makes up the majority of a vehicle’s weight, so its market price has the biggest impact on scrap values. However, other materials such as aluminium and copper can also contribute to the overall value of a car.

Because these commodities are traded globally, prices can rise or fall depending on international demand, economic conditions, and manufacturing trends.

Top 5 Cars Scrapped in 2025

The vehicles most commonly scrapped in our 2025 data were familiar models that dominated UK roads during the early 2000s and 2010s.

Make & Model Average Scrap Value 2024 Average Scrap Value 2025
Vauxhall Astra
£286 £295
Ford Focus £268 £274
Vauxhall Corsa £245 £252
Peugeot 207 £256 £266
Ford Fiesta
£242 £251

The Vauxhall Astra was the most commonly scrapped vehicle in our data.

This aligns with wider industry findings showing the Astra is one of the most frequently scrapped models across the UK, largely due to the huge number sold during the 2000s.

These vehicles were once among the most popular family cars in Britain, so it is no surprise that many are now reaching the end of their lifespan.

Top 10 Most Scrapped Car Makes (2025)

Our data also revealed the makes most frequently scrapped during the year.

Rank Car Make Percentage of Vehicles Scrapped
1 Vauxhall 16%
2 Ford 15.6%
3 Renault 10.7%
4  Volkswagen 7.7%
5 Nissan 6.8%
6 Peugeot 5.2%
7 Citroen 4.3%
8 BMW 3.7%
9 Toyota 3.5%
10 Audi 3.2%

These results reflect the types of vehicles that were most commonly sold in the UK over the past two decades. High-volume manufacturers such as Ford and Vauxhall dominate the scrappage market simply because so many of their cars were originally sold.

Additional 2025 Scrap Car Statistics

Industry statistics provide an interesting look at what the “average” scrap car in the UK looks like. Research suggests that:

  • Around 61% of scrapped cars are petrol
  • Approximately 39% are diesel
  • Hybrid and electric vehicles currently represent a very small percentage of scrapped vehicles
  • Silver is the most commonly scrapped colour
  • The Ford Focus is often the most frequently scrapped model nationwide

These trends reflect the vehicles that dominated UK roads during the early 2000s and are now reaching the end of their life cycle.

Metric Result
Average mileage of scrapped vehicles 128,400 miles
Most common fuel type Petrol (61%)
Second most common fuel type Diesel (39%)
Hybrid/Electric vehicles scrapped 1%
Most common colour Silver (21%)
Second most common colour Black (19%)
Third most common colour Blue (17%)
Oldest vehicle scrapped 1993 Nissan Micra (32 years old)

Highest Paying Scrap Vehicles

Although smaller hatchbacks make up a large proportion of scrapped vehicles, larger cars often deliver the biggest payouts.

In our data, Land Rover vehicles achieved the highest average scrap value at £306.

This trend is also seen across wider scrap market reports. Larger SUVs and executive vehicles typically fetch higher scrap offers due to their weight and the amount of metal they contain.

On the opposite end of the scale, very small cars tend to produce lower scrap values because they contain less recoverable metal.

The Environmental Importance of Vehicle Recycling

Scrapping a vehicle is not simply about crushing metal.

Modern recycling facilities are designed to recover as much material as possible from end-of-life vehicles. Fluids such as oil, fuel and coolant are safely removed, reusable components are separated, and metals are processed so they can be reused in manufacturing.

This process helps reduce waste and lowers the need for raw materials to be mined or produced from scratch.

Vehicle recycling therefore plays an important role in the circular economy, ensuring that valuable materials continue to be reused long after a vehicle has reached the end of the road.

Final Thoughts

The 2025 scrap car market remained stable and continued to offer solid returns for drivers looking to dispose of older vehicles.

Our data shows that the typical scrap car in 2025 was around 19 years old with more than 120,000 miles on the clock, usually a petrol-powered hatchback that had served its owner for nearly two decades.

Models such as the Vauxhall Astra, Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta continue to dominate scrappage figures due to the huge numbers originally sold in the UK during the early 2000s.

Larger vehicles, particularly SUVs and 4x4s, produced the strongest scrap payouts because of their weight and the amount of recoverable metal they contain.

With the UK car fleet continuing to age and repair costs rising, it is likely that scrappage volumes will remain strong over the coming years.

For drivers with an old car that is no longer economical to repair, scrapping it can still provide a simple way to recover some value while ensuring the vehicle is responsibly recycled.
